Plot[edit]

In a Manhattan apartment building, Max’s life as a favorite pet is turned upside down when his owner Katie brings home Duke, a giant and unrulygrey mongrel from the pound. Being so used to being the only dog in Katie’s attention and love and having the apartment to himself with no rules or boundaries to abide by other than not making too much noise that would bother the neighbors which he does not mind breaking once in awhile when he barks at passing cars or delivery men out of pure excitement or boredom since there are no other dogs around for him to play with. Getting used to living with Duke proves to be difficult for Max as Duke likes to eat Max’s food and track mud all over their home which doesn’t go over well with Max’s OCD cleanliness habits that he has developed over time due to being the only dog in the apartment for so long. Things come to a head when Duke knocks over one of Max’s towers of stored food cans which brings both dogs into confrontation until they are finally broken up by Katie who scolds both of them for fighting but ends up laughing at them when she sees them sitting on either side of her holding onto her leg showing how bonded they have become after their little fight which shows that Max has finally warmed up to Duke and accepts him as his new best friend much to his dismay.

Later that night while waiting for Katie to come home from work Max tells Gidget (Jenny Slate), a white Pomeranian who lives next door and has secretly been in love with Max ever since she first met him that he has developed feelings for another pet named Heartshert whom he met at Central Park earlier that day much to Gidget’s jealousy but she quickly snaps out of her daze when she overhears Norman (Liam Aiken), a blue cape parrot who lives upstairs trying to convince Candy(Tara Strong),a pink sugar glider also upstairs that he is actually a sea turtle so he can eat her insects since turtles are known for being strict vegetarians which she easily sees through his lie but goes along with it anyways since she enjoys his company.
